During a recently tryint time, my dear friend Cindy (Bear) Vielstich sent me a little package containing this pink bowl, some dirt and tiny Pansy seeds, which I carefully planted, watered and whispered to over the next few weeks.

I prepared a rich bed of soil for my Babies and transplanted them today, can you see 8 tiny shoots in the large container below?

Well, they really are in there, and I'll update you on their progress. Growing things remind us of Father in Heaven's continued care and love. That little package has brought so much joy!

While Morgan and the other stinky boys were upstairs playing video games and eating pizza, the girls stayed downstairs in the kitchen and listened to Jason Mraz while we painted our nails - both toe and finger! I think Jenna had the best time of all....yes, those are her little "tootsies" on the bottom, right. The girls included Cindy Alder and her girls Amy (green sweatshirt) and Jenna, Sam (white shirt) and Kayla (adorable green bow) Kohlert.

When my Hoyt Library boss, Carrie Murray celebrated her 80th Birthday, I decided to create a birthday cake she would never forget! Knowing Carrie enjoys Italian food, especially pasta, I went to my cookbook "Hello, Cupcake!" and created this extravaganza in Carrie's honor.
Step 1: bake the cupcakes, following the recipe in the book
Step 2: frost them
Step 3: place the cupcakes in a lasagna pan and squeeze "spaghetti" out of a hole in a Ziploc Freezer bag
Step 4: unwrap Hazelnut chocolates (meatballs) and grate white chocolate (Parmesan cheese)
Step 5: combine chocolates and low-sugar strawberry jam
Step 5: arrange on "spaghetti"
Step 6: sprinkle with "cheese".
Super easy and delicious!

Ward Thanksgiving Extravaganza, 08!

When we discovered there were many families in the Wilkes-Barre Ward who were without extended family close-by, we invited all of them in our Thanksgiving Feast. Of course, we could never have squeezed everybody into our kitchen, so we changed venues and met at the Church. Everybody brought something delicious to share: Mexican food, cakes, pies, ham, ribs, rolls, salads, sodas, veggies and of course (pictured with Bradley), Steve The Turkey.

Left Thumb Surgery - DONE!

On February 7 I had the anticipated surgery performed by Dr. Bill, and now that it's behind me, I'm feeling GREAT. (I even managed to play my guitar long enough to burn the CD for Girls Camp, 2009! Feeling better every day.

Olivia's Injury

While attending a Women's' Retreat at Seneca Lake Camp on October 10th, Olivia suffered an injury: a flat tyre (yes, my American friends, that is the correct way to spell that black, rubber thing!). Loyal friends Cindy Alder and Amy Olson set to work, and would have successfully changed the tyre had the mechanic not tightened the lug nuts soooo tight they could NOT be budged!

Sir Robert Taylor to the rescue! With a little help from an electric screwdriver and much hopping on the spanner (again: this is the correct use of the word...."wrench" is an American term!) the lug nuts were loosened and Olivia was as right as rain. THANKS, Sir Robert!

The Arrival of the Otter

We are thrilled to have Ottie with us in Pringle!
She arrived in Pennsylvania with Moetie Johnston
on Labor Day, and I drove out to Millville to pick her
up.
At first she wasn't very interested in leaving the 3
acres and Moetie's tender care, but once she got
into the car, she was happy to be riding!

Ottie has become reacquainted with our home, remembers
the rules and is particularly interested in Morgan's bunk bed,
where Meg and Danny slept when they lived with us.
It will take some time for Giovanni to feel less afraid of Ottie,
but he's becoming more and more brave!

Achilles Tendon, anyone?

Yup,
when I called in to the ladies at the Circulation Desk at the Hoyt, telling them that I needed help, I wasn't kidding.

I'd run a few errands, and Madi and I were ready to start work as usual.

It was not to be; the heavy library door sliced into the back of my leg as I was letting myself in.

Co-workers, Helen and Jeannette, came to my rescue with paper towels and a first aid kit, and then Jeannette followed me to the Emergency Room, leaving Helen to clean up the mess (yes, there was a LOT of it!), and fill out the accident report.

My good friend Holly, met us at the hospital, and I called Dave in New Jersey to let him know that I was probably going to need a few stitches.

The ER was quiet, and within a few minutes, I was lying on my belly, being treated.

Brian, (my friendly nurse) was followed by Billy, (my friendly ER Tech) and Mike (my other friendly ER Tech), and finally, the man of the hour: Frank my friendly nurse practitioner, who took a look and determined that the Achilles Tendon had not been nicked, so he would go ahead and sew me up.

Which he did.

And a superb job he did too. 10 stitches, a tetanus shot and prescription for an antibiotic, and I was on my way.

Holly followed me in her car to make sure I bypassed the bars, and the excitement was finally over.

Advil helps with the pain, ice feels marvelous, and Dave's offered to haul my crutches out of the garage - I'll need them!

Spring has finally arrived in Pennsylvania. Our garden (pictured) is beginning to come back to life after a long, dreary winter. Temperatures are in the 70s during the day, in the 50s at night. The air is rife with pollen and trees are in bloom: pink, white and purple blossoms. The birds are back and a skunk came a-calling during the night earlier this week. A fat, furry bumble bee scurried in and out of the tiny purple flowers in the rockery this evening and all the windows are left open in the house.
My favorite time of year! How grateful I am to be alive.

Winter, 2007/8

We grew to love Lyle and Nadean during the time they served as the Missionary Couple at Seneca Lake Camp. Morgan grew especially close to "Elder Lyle", who taught him how to drive the old truck and allowed him to ride all over the property in a golf cart. Even Madi was welcome in the Tryons home. The Tryons have returned to their family in Arizona.

ages ago. My hand was very painful for a while, but
I'm back to knitting and doing all the things I
love to do (except writing long letters, opening cans and turning

I visited Dr. Bill on Friday and Dianne Smiles (yes, that's her real name - it suits her too!) removed the 17 stitches in my hand, applied steri-strips, and Dr. Bill put on the cast, which will remain on for 4 weeks.
Interesting Note: it's hard to believe that that awful gash is less painful than my thumb was before the surgery.

I've been watching Elizabethan movies, reading books about Anne Boleyn, Henry VII, etc., and I'm horrified at the damage a scalpel can do - never mind a hatchet and chopping block! And the horror show you're viewing is the tip of the iceberg, so to speak! I can't WAIT to see what lurks beneath the bandage, gauze and plaster.
The surgery went well, with that thumb immobilized, it's less painful than before the surgery on Monday (I can't say the same for my typing skills or my current abillity to unwrap and start a fresh roll of toilet paper.)
Back to see Dr. Bill on Friday for stitch removal and permanent cast.
No more pain meds, and I'm heading to the gymn for the first time tomorrow - somebody there will tie my shoelaces, surely?)

AA or "Annie's Arthritis"

Arthritis at the base of the thumb, technically affects the carpo-metacarpal (CMC) joint, i.e. the joint between the bones of the wrist and the first bone of the thumb. This is quite a remarkable joint as it allows the thumb to move in virtually all directions.

The thumb is absolutely critical to our ability to do many activities, so when it becomes painful it can be incredibly frustrating. Unfortunately for women CMC joint arthritis is far more common than in men. There are a number of different theories which include increased laxity in the joint in women, with tighter contact pressures but there is probably a genetic component as well.

Treatment Options

I've been receiving Cortisone injections into both arthritic joints for over a year - a VERY painful procedure, let me tell you - and these shots have bought time before surgery, which is now required. Dr. Bill will remove the Trapezium bone in my right hand (first) and replacing it with tendon from my wrist.

In effect this forms a fibrous joint. There have been a number of variations of the surgical method but the simplest is often the best; forming the 'fibrous' joint by simply folding in adjacent soft tissue, primarily the thickened capsule of the arthritic joint (2) and securing the new construct with dissolvable sutures (3). However, to develop the stability the thumb requires, it is necessary for the hand to be immobilised in a cast for about 6 weeks.

Once surgery on the right hand has been completed, I will consider the same procedure for the left.

Got to get through Girls Camp in the meantime!

(I begged Dr. Bill to do both surgeries at the same time - he refused....for obvious reasons, the least of which is the fact that we don't own a bidet.)

I celebrated my birthday on Friday, January 11th. It was a lovely day, with co-workers at the Hoyt presenting me with a birthday cake, complete with (only 4, thank goodness!) candles, cards and gifts. Annette and Scott Bowen sent a summer flower arrangement with a balloon, and Dave arrived home from New Jersey on Saturday bearing baby's breath, carnations and roses. The Relief Society serenaded me on Wednesday evening; Maribelle Badilla baked one of her famous birthday cakes. Jenny and her family in Australia sent a little clam shell box containing a vibrant, blue bracelet and Mari McGrew, who shares the same birthday, sent a beautiful fabric box containing Yankee candles. Emails and phone messages arrived and I am expecting a box from Cam and Natalie. I'm going to New Jersey on Friday to spend time with Dave, and we're going out to dinner....so my birthday goes on and on and on!
Thank you to all the people who love me. Hmmmm, how I relish my Birthday!

Any woman who’s ever dealt with car mechanics or salesmen will relate to what I call the “John Wayne Little Lady” syndrome. Granted, in describing a mechanical problem with a realistic sound effect probably stirs ingratiating feelings in most logical/mechanical minded men, but I’m humiliated by the conciliatory pat on the head before being sent outside to play in the sandbox.

When a friend told me about the perfect Volkswagen Beetle glinting in the early winter sunshine at Lou’s Garage Used Car Sales on Pierce Street in Kingston, I summoned all my courage and, with black Lab Madi along for moral support, drove over to take a look. We were greeted by a trio of Italians: Lou, Chris and Mike, brothers who now share in their father Lou’s Used Car Sales, that’s been around since the fifties.

Lou’s Garage runs like a perfectly oiled piece of machinery. Lou II is the businessman/mechanic, Chris is the salesperson/mechanic and Mike is the detailer/mechanic, all three brothers working side by side in apparently perfect harmony.

Chris invited Madi and I into the back office and explained how some of the used cars sold at Lou’s Garage are purchased by the brothers at various auctions; some are trade-ins. We surfed the web together, searching for the perfect car for me, at the perfect price.

All the while, the Beetle outside on the lot seemed to call my name, and once I stated my interest in the vehicle, Chris set to work to figure out what it would take to make her mine.

I opted to sell my own car on EBay instead of trading it, and so the waiting game began: cleaning the car, taking the photographs, posting the listing, watching the bidding online, awaiting the clearance of the cashier’s check at the bank, and finally having the cash in hand.

For almost four weeks, the new car waited patiently on the Lou’s Garage lot, sporting a “hold” sticker which cost me a hundred dollar deposit. Every few days I’d call Chris with the latest EBay update, and every time we spoke, I was assured that he would hold the Beetle for as long as he could.

When Madi and I finally returned to hand over the bulging bank envelope, Lou II escorted us back to the office, again released the bungee cord holding the door open, and carefully went over all the paperwork. Even though I financed a portion of the purchase price, there was no need for me to go to the Bank. Lou’s Garage took care of all the other details as well, so there was no reason for me to visit an Inspection Station, a Notary or Auto Tag Office. We simply did it all right there, and within thirty minutes, Madi and I drove off the lot in our spotless, seamlessly running little car named “Olivia”, with a 60-day engine light, 6 month/6,000 mile power train warranty.

And I held on to my dignity through the entire transaction. Thank you to the Brothers who have restored my faith in the used car industry.

Many of you know that Madi and I work at the Hoyt Public Library in Kingston, PA. Margie Langdon, a Volunteer, keeps Madi "dressed to the Nines" in Seasonal Bandanas. These adorable "clothes" are beautifully quilted, and our Girl receives many compliments on her outfits.

Each week-day morning, Madi knows we're going to "work" when I slip her collar into the bandana chosen for that particular day; week-ends are not her favorite time.
Just before Christmas Margie presented Madi and I with a large box containing a quilt created from the fabric of each of Madi's bandanas, with the above inscription.

Our Utah Grandbaby is pure joy! Daniel (Boobaya) and I "chat" regularly on the phone (though he usually hangs up on me). We're SO excited to see Daniel - oh, and his parents - in Vegas for Christmas in a few days.
Meg is doing so well at school, she finished one of her "bugaboo" classes, and is now working up at Sundance Ski Resort. Sadly, Danny is away from the little family, working in Seattle.

A Letter to Tommy

Dear Tommy,
We are writing this letter to tell you how much we appreciated your kindness to Morgan at the Scouting court of honor last night. Although Morgan looks like you and the other boys, his autism creates roadblocks that most people don’t take the time to understand.

Morgan can’t screen out noise or light, the feel of his clothes on his body, or even the sound of his own breathing. I often try to imagine what it would be like to have such a heightened sense of awareness. Without medication, he would not be able to function at all.

As Morgan’s mom and dad, we find it difficult to watch him struggle when he’s with others his age. His deepest desire is to have friends and to be accepted, but making friends is also his deepest struggle. Last night he was nervous about getting his lines right, but you calmly led him through each part of the program. I will always have a picture in my mind of you, a small blond boy in glasses, looking up into Morgan’s face, forcing him to make eye contact, telling him that he was going to be fine and that he was doing a good job. We watched as you smiled and clapped when he received his awards. You quietly put your hand on his arm to calm him when he became overzealous, and you prompted him when he stumbled over his lines.

Most important, you recognize Morgan’s presence in your Scout troop, while others often ignore him and turn away their eyes, as if that will make him disappear. We’ve also been aware of you during Sunday School, helping Morgan read a scripture, encouraging him to sit quietly, smiling at him, and, in turn, giving him a reason to smile.

One day when you’re a father, you’ll appreciate what it means to parents when they see a young
man treat their disabled son with respect and love. We can see that you’ll be a generous, kind
adult. We know that the Lord has a special reward for you and others who love His “different”
children, and Morgan will be there to cheer when you receive it.

Greetings on this sunny morning! We've just survived a big snow day, the sun is out, and we're expecting a storm tomorrow (Sunday, Dec. 16th).

As you well know, we've been remodeling since Eve sampled the first apple, and are FINALLY able to enjoy the fruits of the labors of many people, namely Jim Simonson, Norm, Dan Braley, Chris Swanson, Rob Sloan, Norm Harding, John Wanberg, Meggy Shane, Jess (DL) Kohlert, Danny Shane, Little Chris, Walter, countless full-time Missionaries and of course, DAVE!

These pictures show the upstairs living room, complete with Madi on her bed.

Note the carpeted stairs, French doors (which lead to a painful death at the moment!) and the beautiful "Balustrade".

We are so grateful for the toil and love of so many!
